<br />
I recently finished this simple disappearing nine-patch quilt top. It is 67"X55". I'm waiting to get the backing fabric; then I will layer, baste and quilt it by machine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzC6pj7AFDQfYxVhaH_Zdr1gL_YoW3RlN5YIGT3A-G6qdgFCQLOXWjLa7iSP4zBl40Ih2gJAS_PQFD2WeAx5l4WEWgj6vhZ2awYUnVqwUGwDgKrnB98K8etFGWmz8qwoiyxzIg11flOMig/s1600/P9030011.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzC6pj7AFDQfYxVhaH_Zdr1gL_YoW3RlN5YIGT3A-G6qdgFCQLOXWjLa7iSP4zBl40Ih2gJAS_PQFD2WeAx5l4WEWgj6vhZ2awYUnVqwUGwDgKrnB98K8etFGWmz8qwoiyxzIg11flOMig/s1600/P9030011.jpg" height="640" width="580" /></a></div>
<br />
I made the centre accent squares all red and arranged them to match up on the diagonal. I also tried to match the corresponding large corner squares. I found this created a more cohesive look. I did try laying it out, so the white rectangles lined up as a sashing but the quilt looked too much like a USA flag; not exactly the look and feel I was aiming for.<br />
<br />
So, I'm thinking of using wool batting with this to make it extra soft and warm. Once it's all quilted and binded, I'll make another post with photos.<br />
<br />
Happy Sewing!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been planning a quilt that requires specific placement of light, medium and dark value fabrics in order to get a 3 dimensional effect. I have these batik precuts that I'm planning to use, so I sat down and played around with them. I discovered a simple trick to accurately arranging the colours from light to dark. A lot of them were obvious, but for most of the middle shades it was more difficult to determine which is darker.</div>

I've been really inspired by the craft of quilting lately; especially hand piecing. Today I wanted to share my english paper piecing project which I started probably a year ago. I often find it relaxing to do things which are slow, such as hand piecing, hand quilting or knitting. I then alternate with another project that is faster such as machine sewing quilt blocks that are simple and quick to create. This one may take me a long time to complete. So far I've sewn 150 hexagons... only 850 hexagons to go! But the point is not to just finish it. The purpose is to enjoy each step, each stitch and just relax into it. I have to keep reminding myself this. I love the different patterns and colours. I love the way the pattern emerges as I sew each row.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is my sewing kit. I sew only one row at a time. I love to sew outside on the deck and enjoy the fresh air, sunshine and breeze</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1e56NqeJkFgDqY2wOFNbWQvOuc93WuasO3RzOVeLpGhiEZqZZwwHPaHqQZWwrDYrTGeMpbaD2bNSRnwG6rFxpRDwL3N5GT96FuPnmPq8J4QqTIPhw1bH1dk-MHgmkZFPSQ9YHu8_BrSnv/s1600/P8060004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1e56NqeJkFgDqY2wOFNbWQvOuc93WuasO3RzOVeLpGhiEZqZZwwHPaHqQZWwrDYrTGeMpbaD2bNSRnwG6rFxpRDwL3N5GT96FuPnmPq8J4QqTIPhw1bH1dk-MHgmkZFPSQ9YHu8_BrSnv/s1600/P8060004.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I start off by basting the hexagon templates to the fabric pieces for whatever row is next.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I recently made another pie carrier as a gift. This is the fifth one I've made, and I'm sure I'll make more. They're simple to make, and they're unique, practical gifts. I originally got the idea/ pattern from Vanessa (aka The Crafty Gemini). Here are her <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFiI5M3-At0">video instructions</a>.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I completed my Anna Dress, which is my first By Hand London pattern. It seemed to fit well with little alterations. The skirt fits better than most patterns hip wise and back curve wise. I love the way it hugs at the upper hip area (something I rarely get with other patterns). I suppose I should be fitting my skirts as well as my bodices.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I cut a size 12 and lengthened the bodice to size 14 line (~3/4" increase). I also sewed the size 14 pleats instead of the size 12 pleats. The rest of the dress is made as per instructions. The back skirt pattern pieces were a bit confusing because the centre back was not labelled. If they would only label the centre back and side seam it would have made my life a lot easier. If I make it again, I'll label the pattern pieces centre back and side seam. The front skirt panels were not a problem at all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The fabric I used here is a lightweight cotton voile print with a retro feel to it. It could have benefited from some underlining, but otherwise, it's comfortable and cool.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I got some wrinkling in the back. I'm not sure if this is a fit issue or a fabric issue. This fabric is thin and wrinkles so easily. I wonder if I underlined it in some batiste if this would resolve. I'm pretty happy with my invisible zipper.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love wearing this dress. It's super comfy for hot summer days. I would definitely make it again in a better quality fabric, or take the time to underline it with some cotton batiste because the wrinkling drives me crazy.</div>
<br />
I already have some tentative plans for using this skirt with the Cambie bodice in a floral cotton sateen!<br />
<br />
Happy Sewing!Naylahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09712658908740175739noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-649596095347164108.post-46880119600997888162014-06-30T12:39:00.000-05:002015-01-26T18:44:59.508-06:00Alabama Chanin!My Alabama Chanin sewing kit finally arrived in the mail! The garment I chose is Anna's Garden shell top. I wanted a blush colour jersey, but it looks a bit more sandy than blush to me. The kit comes with button craft thread for construction by hand and embroidery floss for the reverse appliqué/embroidery. There's also some matching binding and a garment label.<br />

<br />
I was so excited I pin basted the backing as soon as I got it out of the package. What I LOVE about Alabama Chanin is the fact that it's all constructed by hand. Their jersey is made with 100% organic cotton that is also wonderful. It feels soft yet sturdy. I'm going to baste it with thread so it will be a bit more portable.<br />

I finished my Chambray Hawthorn dress. Yay! This dress pattern is Colette 1026 Hawthorn. I used Robert Kaufmann herringbone chambray fabric that is 100% cotton yarn dyed. I also used some floral Liberty of London cotton lawn for the facings. This fabric makes this dress so comfy, light and airy but also has a lovely drape. I didn't change the pattern too much. I made a size 8 and moved the bodice darts laterally by about 1cm that made a tremendous improvement in the fit. I also made a 3/4" forward shoulder adjustment which got rid of some wrinkling between shoulder and bust.</div>

I decided to slipstitch the hem by hand because I love hand stitching. It only took me part of a leisurely afternoon sitting in the bay window while listening to some classical music on CBC radio. This fabric is awesome to slipstitch by hand because the stitches disappear into it, and it is entirely invisible from the front.</div>

<br />
So in conclusion, I'm pretty happy with this dress. It fits fairly well, but it could be taken in at the waist just a tiny bit. That may make the excess fabric hanging in my low back curve sit nicer. Photos of me wearing it are coming soon! I may make the 3/4 length sleeve version in the future. Maybe for fall....<br />

I've been working on the Sanctuary Quilt for a long time. I had it folded away in the basement for the longest time until just recently. I don't know what made me want to pull it out again because I have my Hawaiian quilting to work on for my hand quilting fix. It's so beautiful I would love to finish it soon so I can bind it and wash it. This quilt was from a quilt kit, so the fabric was all co-ordinated for me.</div>

I used a fan design that is easy to repeat all over the quilt. I made the templates with manila tag folders that I cut out. There are six semi circle templates. I used a water soluble marking pen that is now my favourite because it's easy to use, and the colour shows up well and it disappears easily with a spray of water. The brand is called "Unique" I've tried so many marking pens, pencils and chalk, and I like this one the best so far.<br />

I'm 3/4 done the main part of the quilt then I have to do the borders. Lots more to go!<br />

Happy Quilting!Naylahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09712658908740175739noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-649596095347164108.post-12688782447950383932014-06-10T20:24:00.000-05:002014-06-10T20:24:50.287-05:00MMM'14 Summary and ConclusionWe're already well into June, but I thought I should summarise my Me-Made-May experience.<br />
<br />
Some observations:<br />
1. Beginning of May is still too cold to wear dresses and skirts unless wool leotards, socks and cardigans are involved.<br />
2. I realised that I mostly sew sundresses.<br />
3. I love wearing comfy jeans<br />
4. I have yet to sew a comfy pair of pants.<br />
5. It would be nice to have some casual, comfortable garments perhaps made with cotton knit fabrics.<br />
<br />
After the second week I was getting bored of my me-made wardrobe. I was wearing mostly my jeans and hand knit sweaters. It was good in a way because I re-discovered some nice sweaters. But I definitely need to expand the variety of garments in my closet. I had a couple skirts that I love but never wear because I don't have a top that looks right with either of them. I have blouses that don't really go with anything except for jeans. So I have some sewing goals now to improve my handmade wardrobe into something a little more realistic.<br />
<br />
Sewing Goals:<br />
1. Learn to sew with knits<br />
2. Focus more on casual everyday garments<br />
3. Sew a plain top to go with my flower printed skirt.<br />
4. Sew with more basic print fabrics that match with other pieces<br />
5. Sew a pair of shorts for summer!<br />
6. Sew a flannel shirt for cooler days<br />
<br />
Well, that's it for now. I'm sure I'll come up with more goals later on. I always have so many things I want to make and not enough time! This list will keep me on track though as it's always tempting to sew another sundress.<br />
<br />
Happy Sewing!<br />

My Gingham Cambie dress is completed! I used a navy blue and white cotton blend gingham. It doesn't feel like 100% cotton. It's also fully lined in a soft cotton batiste. I altered the bodice again to create a better fit, and I used the Hollyburn skirt pattern. It's incredibly comfortable but next time I think I'll make it with a longer skirt. This felt a bit too short for me. I feel like either Alice in Wonderland or Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz!</div>

I made some progress with my zipper skills. This one is a bit more invisible, and the waistline matches up! Next time though I'll be careful to do the neck edge a bit closer to the top of the zipper. There is a teeny gap but not enough to warrant a hook and eye. The bodice looks a bit too tight in this photo, but it doesn't feel too tight at all.</div>

I've been too lazy to take daily photos. I'll have to set up a tripod somewhere bright and remember to take a photo before I get busy with my day. It's been so cold, I've been wearing a lot of sweaters still. I did wear 2 dresses but usually with a cardigan on top. I also wore the knit cardigans on their own with a pair of jeans. I wore my cozy Icelandic sweater again while working outside one morning.</div>

Here are a few photos of my me-made projects that I've rediscovered during the first week of Me-Made-May.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've discovered that I tend to sew summer dresses mostly because it's fun. However, it's a bit too chilly to wear summer dresses at this time of year here. So I've been wearing a lot of my hand knit sweaters. On the first day, I wore my "calendula sweater". Here it is on my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/canadiangal/jetty">Ravelry Page</a>. I also wore this sweater another day with my denim Hollyburn skirt (Sewaholic) and wool leotards. I don't think I have a picture of that skirt. Yes, I'm a Sewaholic patternaholic.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Another pullover that I've been cozy in is my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/canadiangal/mud-season">Earth Sweater</a> and jeans. Comfy and warm for everyday.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi50O8UzYQzIek-kmnwAtbolVi8Z_5X9I1ubKN3BOgpfw8OmpxujydpDJpdB7b8N4PqMGyRQmwayhUuAa4cHhVJuz4z139VKGoOK-zRKeIhBHth0pwAGRX8Uf-yj0-X5AbLo7rJkzdFFyf0/s1600/P5020018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi50O8UzYQzIek-kmnwAtbolVi8Z_5X9I1ubKN3BOgpfw8OmpxujydpDJpdB7b8N4PqMGyRQmwayhUuAa4cHhVJuz4z139VKGoOK-zRKeIhBHth0pwAGRX8Uf-yj0-X5AbLo7rJkzdFFyf0/s1600/P5020018.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Oh yeah, and I've been wearing these cozy <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/canadiangal/crabapple">Crabapple Socks</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA4lROGdfJbTwVA8AAKGu6ZnCPBd7sXua67cQjkcSVyPpHYWOODRjDdjDK9Cy93-y9O2eiVUzE6vYgBUtneUfs6a3afCz87dRWFFlls2_HEfuwcBXtsQv5O82Ohk3M0r9XbShv5akPuWwu/s1600/DSCF0526.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA4lROGdfJbTwVA8AAKGu6ZnCPBd7sXua67cQjkcSVyPpHYWOODRjDdjDK9Cy93-y9O2eiVUzE6vYgBUtneUfs6a3afCz87dRWFFlls2_HEfuwcBXtsQv5O82Ohk3M0r9XbShv5akPuWwu/s1600/DSCF0526.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
... and Saturday evening I wore my brand new Denim Cambie for the first time out for dinner</div>

Well, so far so good. Hopefully things will warm up a bit so I can wear something more than sweaters and jeans.</div>
<br />
<br />
Thanks for reading.<br />
Happy sewing and knitting!<br />

I made view A in a lightweight denim. I did a full bust adjustment that incorporated a side seam dart. The denim is from my stash (lots leftover from a previous project). It's lined with black cotton batiste that is also from my stash. I even found an invisible zipper in my notions drawer, so I didn't have to go out to purchase any supplies to make this dress. Yay!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">I love the way this dress turned out, but I think there's definitely room for improvement fit-wise. There's a tiny bit of gaping on the neckline. I stay-stitched the neck edge to prevent stretching. With the delicate curved sweetheart neckline, it's prone to stretching and distortion, and although I thought I was careful, I wonder whether I may have stretched it out of shape. The waist darts have somehow creeped up right into the bust point. Next time I will lower those darts and raise the neckline a tad. So that's the bodice. The skirt is an entirely different story. It does not fit well at all. I mean, it's ok, and I would wear it out but it's far from a perfect fit for me. It needs to be taken in on the hips and the back darts lowered. Either that or lengthen the waist to hip distance. I'm definitely not a pear shape so I don't know why I didn't fit the skirt at all. I think the pattern said A-line skirt and I thought it's relatively free in the hip anyways so I won't bother changing it. It turns out to be a bit more of a roomy straight skirt that bulges at the hip! I think next time I'll make it with a half circle skirt or the Lonsdale dress skirt pattern. I love the drape of the Lonsdale dress skirt</span></div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I wanted to do a post all about Icelandic sweaters. I am a huge fan of not only traditional Icelandic sweaters, but also Icelandic wool, specifically Létt Lopi; although I haven't tried the other Lopi yarns. It's sturdy, warm and has a bit of a halo to it sometimes which I absolutely love! There's a lot of fancy designer yarns out there with fabulous colours and feel soft but when your fabric gets bigger than the size of mittens or a hat, it drapes too much. I don't like wimpy drapey sweaters that in a couple months look raggedy and old. Létt Lopi is not a wimpy wool. It actually looks better and better with time. It'll start to felt slightly but no pills.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, here is my most recent Icelandic sweater. I completed it a couple weeks ago. Check it out on my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/canadiangal/riddari" target="_blank">Ravelry page</a>. It's a super comfy sweater and finished just in time for spring. No more winter parka! Sometimes I wear this with a long sleeve shirt underneath and a scarf when walking to the river.</div>

Now, here is a sweater I completed in January for my husband. I've worn it a couple times myself. It's just a little baggy on me but still looks good. This sweater has a folded 1x1 ribbed collar that I really like. It makes a nice finished edge. Here is the ravelry <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/canadiangal/afmli---20-year-anniversary-sweater">post</a>. </div>

So, I think I'm done with Icelandic sweaters for the time being. Now that I have a couple in different colour schemes, it will be a while before I make another. They will definitely get a lot of appreciation and use. On the horizon, perhaps may be an Icelandic fall jacket or something of the like. Who's to say?<br />

<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">That's my first official Me-Made-May pledge. I'm actually looking forward to it and I think it is a really great idea. Click <a href="http://sozowhatdoyouknow.blogspot.ca/2014/04/me-made-may14-sign-up-here.html">here</a> to sign up! I think we often get excited about sewing (or knitting) new garments but then don't feel as proud as we should to wear them out in public. This is a month about being proud of what you made and showing it to the world. Let the rest of the world see the amazing things that can be done by hand. Much slower than mass-production factories but so much more rewarding, unique and sustainable. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The few times I go to the mall, I see all the same styles. Everyone wears the exact same thing! It's kind of funny actually. I very often kind of giggle inside. Pant leg styles, in particular are nearly always the same. So, who exactly is it that gets to decide what the style is going to be? Well, I remember my Home Ec. teacher in high school who taught us that fashion swings in a pendulum-like way. At the time, all pants were pretty much straight or maybe slightly tapered. According to our teachers theory, the dreaded bell-bottoms from the 70's will return (gasps erupted from the students). Nobody believed such a thing could ever happen. A short time later, we were all wearing flare-legged pants and thought they were great. So…. my point is, we are pretty much slaves to what is offered at the mall. Personally, I don't care what is "trendy" and prefer not to know. What I like about sewing and knitting is that I can create whatever I want. I can sew vintage patterns if I want or I can make bell bottoms if that's what I feel like wearing. I can also choose my own fabric, yarn or whatever. The point is to make what you like to wear, not what the mall says you should be wearing. I can go on for a long time about this. I guess I am a bit of a non-conformist with some things.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">I also don't like the idea of mass-production in general. It just makes me sad. Just a lot of suffering for all involved, including the planet. The main reason is the focus is usually on quantity and not quality in order to make bigger profits. People buy lots of cheap things that they can then throw out and buy new cheap things that are the new style. It's just insane, really. Then I think of all the poor underpaid workers ruining their health and well-being by making all this cheap clothing. I really don't want to have anything to do with this whole system. It's just totally insane.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Ok, I've gone off on a tangent. Back to the fun of sewing and knitting!</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">I've realized that I have more handmade garments in my closet than I initially thought. It's time to learn to like wearing them more often. Sometimes, if I know something is not perfect, even though it's not visible, I tend to not wear it. So this is about accepting imperfections and learning to love what you made. I think it's going to be an awesome challenge.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Thanks for reading my rant and...</span></span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm back to my blog after a very very long time. I feel sorry to have neglected it for so long. Nevertheless I have been busy with all kinds of crafts. Most recently, I have discovered the amazing world of Hawaiian quilting. My husband and I were in Maui not too long ago. Our hotel was decorated with these amazing quilts. The first of which is the most stunning right at the entrance to the lobby. This design is called "Ulu" meaning breadfruit in Hawaiian. It's meant to signify prosperity. This quilt was so inspiring I decided to make a miniature version myself.</div>

When I got home I started on this Ulu appliqué design for a cushion/pillow. Pretty crazy huh? I was just so inspired. I really enjoy doing the old-school needle-turn appliqué which is the traditional Hawaiian way. It's slow and relaxing.<br />

And here is the really fun quilting part! I used doubled wool batting so it's nice and puffy and soft. Unfortunately I found it difficult to get small even stitches, but it's ok. I enjoy it anyways. It's good practice and I'm sure it'll get better with time. The main thing is that I enjoy it. </div>

Quilt Gallery</h2>
<div>
As of late, I've been starting to feel the urge to start quilting again. I seem to go through spurts of quilt making which alternates with either knitting or garment sewing. If I could, I would do all three at once, but unfortunately I can only focus on one craft at a time. When I start, it seems to go for a few months after which I find myself switching to something else. But, I'm always either sewing, quilting or knitting. So I thought I would share some of my previously made bedquilts!</div>
<h3>
<br /></h3>
<h3>
Wedding Quilt</h3>
<div>
First of all is the Wedding Quilt. I called it that because it was a wedding gift. I think this quilt was one of the first large bedquilts I made. It was a lot of fun making this one. I was just getting the hang of free motion quilting, and I found that if I repeated the mantra: "Slithering snakes, slithering snakes", my quilting was much smoother and curvier, like slithering snakes.</div>

Oh my goodness, those are gigantic stitches. I think this was the first time I hand stitched the binding. Yep, I bet that binding is going to stay put! I remember wanting to make sure the binding was sewn in a durable way so that it can be machine washed without falling apart. So, I didn't do a regular slipstitch. Now; I'm more into doing an invisible slipstitch. It just looks better, and I'm sure it's quite durable.<br />

Birthday Quilt</h3>
<div>
This is a quilt that I made for my sister's birthday last year. I'm in love with the colours and the romantic floral print. I used charm packs and made disappearing nine patch blocks and just mixed them up except for the accent reds that I matched up on a diagonal. It turned out smaller that I had planned. Things tend to shrink when you're dealing with cotton.</div>

Corner Candy Shop</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was a little more work that the previous quilts I've made but it was definitely worth it. The quilt block is called a Patience Corner block. The size of this quilt is like a small bed quilt or a large lap quilt. Again, some shrinking probably from the small scale quilting I did.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This concludes the tour of my little quilt gallery. I'm itching to get my quilting out now. My next project has been on hold for months. It's a gorgeous quilt that is a bit more of a contemporary pattern. The finished blocks have been hanging on my design wall for quite a while untouched while I've been working on garments the last few months. I just go with the flow of my inspiration at the time.</div>

I ended up lengthening the front bodice piece just a tiny bit (maybe 3/4") to make the waistline even and balanced. I kept the size 6 in the skirt as there is not much difference and the design is free in the hip anyways. Otherwise, as previously mentioned, I did a full bust adjustment on the front bodice with a side dart for a better fit. The other thing I did differently from the pattern instructions is that I cut the waistband on the straight of grain rather that on the cross-grain as the pattern indicates. I just wanted to have a really strong waist band that would not stretch out of shape. I did a lot of topstitching on the waistband, pocket edge and top bodice edge because I really love topstitching pretty much everything. I sewed the pocket edge at 1/4" seam allowance instead of 5/8"because, the bigger the pocket, the better!<br />

This quilt is the largest quilt I've made. It fits a queen size bed with a very generous length to allow for a pillow tuck. The amount draping over the side is perfect.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLbz4gC9v6wokyDbDClBdRVM-yaDrx94OCROfQ8yrfymstSUDomTtOYUXPDLq3nfyNVVrkDS4d3CmO-6R167qjz-9meMu67lruH1Y8PVOxFxrBESGhR5qSw3JrKYVnSEMhWcJ02t8E02ix/s1600/DSCF1902.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLbz4gC9v6wokyDbDClBdRVM-yaDrx94OCROfQ8yrfymstSUDomTtOYUXPDLq3nfyNVVrkDS4d3CmO-6R167qjz-9meMu67lruH1Y8PVOxFxrBESGhR5qSw3JrKYVnSEMhWcJ02t8E02ix/s640/DSCF1902.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
This design is very simple. They are 12" blocks; half of which are hourglass and half are four-square blocks. Alternate them and arrange them with lighter colours together and darker colours together. Then you've got this altered squares design which creates an illusion of larger diamonds. I added a border, and voilà! The fabric is from a line called Papillon designed by 3 Sisters<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghz48BYRUkrT3xt0nD-KM7vos_W3oCUAKx1EeVvwnOVd5NOLTjdkgNWrH8RMYDnib_ndEBaYcOcgRU1nUQtLH7v9Pcv7Ow4l9r6HTIQZrZ9UEbplPkGUBWLy9t_FydI14MSA6DRNsXgqO3/s1600/DSCF1896.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghz48BYRUkrT3xt0nD-KM7vos_W3oCUAKx1EeVvwnOVd5NOLTjdkgNWrH8RMYDnib_ndEBaYcOcgRU1nUQtLH7v9Pcv7Ow4l9r6HTIQZrZ9UEbplPkGUBWLy9t_FydI14MSA6DRNsXgqO3/s640/DSCF1896.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's a little closer detail of the fabric. It's so beautiful with muted pastels and detailed butterfly sketches. The quilting was not done by me. This was the first time I sent a quilt to get quilted by a long arm quilter. I sent it to <a href="http://www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/machinequilting">Missouri Star Quilt Company</a>. I usually like to do everything myself but this huge quilt was going to be very difficult to quilt on my little home sewing machine. Although it's more expensive than doing it myself, it was definitely worth it. They really did a fabulous job and it was so quick!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The binding is completely slipstitched by hand. This is one part of the quilt making process that I really learned to love. It's time consuming but looks so much nicer. I've learned to relax into it and enjoy each stitch rather than focus on just getting it done. It took me maybe 3 or 4 days to complete the binding.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjErnlWCdPhQ9mhC_l_Cpxu8xsivRnbjwUR4XPsEbiBcVZmMwb4mxjk3gq4jXx4_z84qn51H82vWLmj-8_ntRJdaucvzdfRpfmECdIKl-6pNobAtSnWblthfTm2qb3bTTHOyak2qtwNw80-/s1600/DSCF1901.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjErnlWCdPhQ9mhC_l_Cpxu8xsivRnbjwUR4XPsEbiBcVZmMwb4mxjk3gq4jXx4_z84qn51H82vWLmj-8_ntRJdaucvzdfRpfmECdIKl-6pNobAtSnWblthfTm2qb3bTTHOyak2qtwNw80-/s640/DSCF1901.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>

There we go! Now Butterfly Quilt is going to the washing machine for it's annual wash!<br />
Happy Sewing!</div>

I have a long list of things I want to sew but this Red Lonsdale dress is next in line. I have lots of this polka dot fabric which is 100% cotton. I made a muslin in size 6 and determined I need to make a full bust adjustment of 1.25 inches. The waist fits perfect but there was a lot of gaping in the upper bust and tight across the middle bust.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGwz1AyvoyK6Q3LqCY8DiF9_aKvSAnyOWhRzychVMZPYso3poONCmu-Nj7TgN5JZu0L0oIDtyDfXuTzUW4z7EcrC7CG0B-vxZgX-RqQrgeWe4EMkZzt1dCBv_QjcePcfhHaUGCd82FndSy/s1600/DSCF1871.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGwz1AyvoyK6Q3LqCY8DiF9_aKvSAnyOWhRzychVMZPYso3poONCmu-Nj7TgN5JZu0L0oIDtyDfXuTzUW4z7EcrC7CG0B-vxZgX-RqQrgeWe4EMkZzt1dCBv_QjcePcfhHaUGCd82FndSy/s640/DSCF1871.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
Here's a picture of my corrected bodice piece. I kept the waist at size 6 and tapered to size 4 at the top of the side seam. I also continued the size 4 with the ties. I may also grade from a size 6 in the waist to a size 4 in the hip and the rest of the skirt down.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeiUSzLQs9dDjGtZAsO-nXlmLe6acc4eNYzdsT-t51VMjYPOwsYSb-jyV9ICSZLpB-t4LPJlvGgAb7C6JvKa9YnzYDmxGM0RZdu1mht4axB5Ay-5q3EDBfXagSQ4qkMBImvzHRzmbEWdON/s1600/DSCF1872.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeiUSzLQs9dDjGtZAsO-nXlmLe6acc4eNYzdsT-t51VMjYPOwsYSb-jyV9ICSZLpB-t4LPJlvGgAb7C6JvKa9YnzYDmxGM0RZdu1mht4axB5Ay-5q3EDBfXagSQ4qkMBImvzHRzmbEWdON/s640/DSCF1872.jpg" width="472" /></a></div>
I like a longer skirt but not quite a maxi dress length; more of a tea length dress so I'm going to lengthen view A to about mid calf. I'm hoping to finish this dress well before my birthday. I can be a slow sewist so its good to have a date to work towards. It's so rewarding to end up with a beautiful garment to wear.<br />
Happy Sewing!<br />

This is actually the first version I made. It is view A. It has a ruffled collar edge. I underlined the bodice and lined the skirt with batiste. I did not lengthen the bodice in this version so although the fit is pretty good. I can feel that the waist sits a bit too high. I don't know, maybe that's the style, but I decided to change it with the second version.<br />

So both dresses have their pros and cons. The shorter one feels more casual and cute but the longer one fits better on my waist and feels more flowy. I guess it just depends on my mood. Well I guess I can now put this pattern away. I'm pretty happy with my 2 new dresses!</div>

Also known as McCalls 6503. This is an unlined dress pattern. I added a skirt lining and a bodice underlining in a white cotton batiste.<br />
The fabric is a floral print cotton lawn fabric. I hemmed the skirt using "hug-snug" tape and used my expensive french cotton lace from my heirloom sewing stash on the hem of the skirt lining. I'll post some more pics of myself actually wearing the dress.<br />
I made a few other modifications. I lengthened the bodice by 1" for a better fit. I also lengthened the skirt significantly (about 6 inches) just because I wanted a more flowy dress rather than a baby doll look.<br />

<h2 style="text-align: center;">
Welcome to my sewing room!</h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"> A few months ago I completed my sewing/craft room. So we can actually use the dining room for DINING. I don't have to worry about cleaning up my project when it came time for dinner and I could continue on where I left off and things are just so much more efficient. I wanted an L-shaped workspace which is helpful when quilting a bed quilt.</span></div>

<br />
So now that I have this beautiful workspace. I have been sewing a lot more. My goal is to create a unique handmade wardrobe. With every project I learn something new. That's the beauty about sewing; theres always more to learn. And the more you learn the more enjoyable it becomes and the more you learn. It's a vicious cycle really.<br />
I will be sharing some of my projects very soon!<br />
Happy Sewing</div>
